What is the Atmakaraka?

Atmakaraka (Sanskrit आत्मकारक, "indicator of the soul") is the central concept of the Jaimini system, founded by the sage Maharishi Jaimini more than 2000 years ago. It runs parallel to the Parashari system and often gives a deeper view of a person's life mission.

Out of the seven planets — excluding Rahu and Ketu — the one that has travelled the most degrees within its sign is chosen. That planet is the Atmakaraka. Its placement by sign, house and nakshatra reveals karmic debts, the main lessons of life and the direction of spiritual growth.

Unlike the Lagnesha (lord of the 1st house) — which shows how you act — the Atmakaraka shows what for you came. It is the difference between function and meaning.

How is the Atmakaraka calculated?

1
Take the 7 planets
Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn. Rahu and Ketu do not take part.
2
Count the degrees within the sign
Each planet is measured by how far it has travelled within its sign, from 0° to 30°. For example: Jupiter in Gemini at 27°15' → score = 27.25.
3
The winner = Atmakaraka
The planet with the highest value. The remaining 6 receive descending roles: Amatyakaraka (career), Bhratrikaraka (siblings), Matrikaraka (mother), Putrakaraka (children), Gnatikaraka (kin) and Darakaraka — the spouse indicator, the lowest-degree planet that describes your partner and marriage.

Atmakaraka — FAQ

Your atmakaraka is the planet with the highest degree within its sign in your birth chart, regardless of which sign it occupies. Compare the degrees, minutes and seconds of the seven classical planets — Sun through Saturn — and the one furthest advanced in its sign is your soul planet. An exact birth time matters: the Moon moves fast enough to change the answer within hours.

In Jaimini astrology the atmakaraka is the significator of the soul (atma) — the planet describing your deepest desire, the lesson your life keeps repeating, and the terrain of your spiritual growth. Its sign, house, dignity and its navamsa position (the karakamsa) are read together; a challenged atmakaraka does not mean a bad life, but a harder, more transformative lesson.

The atmakaraka is the planet with the highest degree in the chart and signifies the self and soul; the darakaraka is the planet with the lowest degree and signifies the spouse and significant partnerships. They are the first and last of the Jaimini chara karakas — the full scheme also includes the amatyakaraka (career), bhratrikaraka, matrikaraka, putrakaraka and gnatikaraka.

It depends on the scheme. The seven-karaka system uses only the Sun through Saturn, so Rahu can never be atmakaraka there. The eight-karaka system adds Rahu, counting its degree in reverse (30° minus its position, since it moves backwards) — in that scheme a late-degree Rahu can become the soul planet. Jaimini commentators differ, and both traditions are in active use.

The karakamsa is the navamsa (D9) sign occupied by your atmakaraka. Jaimini reads it as the map of the soul's direction: innate talents, spiritual inclination and the paths and practices that suit you, with the houses counted from it adding detail. It links the soul planet to the D9, which is why the atmakaraka is always judged in both charts.

None — each planet as atmakaraka sets a different life lesson, not a better or worse fate. Classically, the Sun teaches humility beyond ego, the Moon compassion, Mars restraint of force, Mercury truthful speech, Jupiter generous wisdom, Venus purity in desire, and Saturn patience with sorrow. The planet's dignity and aspects decide how smoothly the lesson unfolds.
