Each nakshatra occupies 13°20' of the zodiac. The Moon passes through one nakshatra in approximately one day. The nakshatra system is used for character determination, compatibility, and choosing auspicious timing.
Each nakshatra is ruled by one of the 9 planets in a specific sequence: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury. This sequence repeats three times.
Each nakshatra is divided into 4 padas (quarters) of 3°20' each. Padas correspond to navamsha (D9) and show finer nuances of character and destiny.
In the Ashtakuta system for determining partner compatibility, the Moon's position in nakshatras is used. Nakshatra-kuta gives a maximum of 8 points out of 36 possible.
