House Systems, Angles & Cusps
House Systems: Placidus vs Whole Sign
Placidus — the modern default — divides houses by time of ascension, so their sizes vary. Whole sign, the oldest system, makes each sign one full house. Koch and Equal are common alternatives; cusps shift between systems, but house meanings stay the same.
Angular, Succedent & Cadent
Houses divide into angular (1, 4, 7, 10 — action and visibility), succedent (2, 5, 8, 11 — resources and stability) and cadent (3, 6, 9, 12 — learning and adaptation). Planets in angular houses are the most prominent in a chart.
House Cusps
A cusp is the degree where a house begins. The four angles — Ascendant (1st), IC (4th), Descendant (7th) and Midheaven (10th) — are the chart's most sensitive points, which is why exact birth time matters.
Intercepted Signs
A sign contained entirely inside a house, touching no cusp. Intercepted signs — and any planets in them — can feel harder to access and often express more fully later in life.

The angular houses — 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th — carry the most weight because they sit on the chart’s four angles, with the 1st (self) and the 10th (career and reputation) usually the most visible. In practice, though, the most important house is wherever your chart concentrates its planets.
Placidus divides the sky by rising time, producing houses of unequal size that vary with latitude; whole sign houses make each entire sign one house, starting from the rising sign. Placidus is the modern default and whole sign the older Hellenistic method — both are valid, and planets near cusps can change house between them.
Angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) begin at the chart’s angles and act with the most initiative; succedent houses (2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th) stabilise and consolidate what the angular houses start; cadent houses (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th) adapt, learn and prepare the turn into the next angle. Traditionally, planets express most strongly in angular houses.
