Grah gochar — how the moving planets activate your natal chart from the Moon sign.
What is Gochar?
Gochar, or Vedic transit, is the daily movement of planets across the zodiac and how they touch the houses and signs of your birth chart. Unlike Western transits, Jyotish reads gochar primarily from the natal Moon sign (Janma Rashi) rather than the Ascendant, because the Moon represents the mind and the moment-to-moment quality of experience. A transit is counted as a number of signs away from your natal Moon, and that count determines whether the planet brings ease or pressure.
Transits work hand in hand with the Vimshottari dasha, but they are not the same thing. The running dasha sets the theme and ripeness of a life period; gochar provides the precise timing that triggers events the dasha already promises. Classical Jyotish refines the raw transit using Ashtakavarga, which grades each sign by benefic points (bindus), and vedha, an obstruction point that can cancel an otherwise favorable transit.
Key transits to watch
Sade Sati
Saturn's roughly seven-and-a-half year passage over the 12th, 1st, and 2nd signs from your natal Moon, unfolding in three phases (rising, peak, and setting). It is the most discussed transit in Jyotish, marking a long cycle of maturation, responsibility, and restructuring. With Saturn in sidereal Pisces until June 2027, the Aquarius, Pisces and Aries moon signs are in Sade Sati now.
Jupiter Transit (Guru Gochar)
Jupiter spends about one year in each sign, completing the zodiac in roughly twelve years. From the natal Moon it is most benefic when transiting the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th signs, supporting growth, wisdom, marriage, children, and expansion of fortune.
Rahu-Ketu Transit
The lunar nodes always move retrograde, taking about eighteen months in each sign and roughly eighteen years for a full cycle. Their transits are deeply karmic and govern eclipse seasons, often forcing sudden, fated turns in the areas of life they touch.
Saturn Dhaiya (Kantaka / Ashtama Shani)
The two-and-a-half year Saturn transit over the 4th sign from the Moon (Kantaka Shani) and the 8th sign from the Moon (Ashtama Shani). These smaller Saturn cycles test the home, peace of mind, health, and longevity, and are watched alongside Sade Sati.
Ashtakavarga Grading
A points-based system that scores every sign of your chart with bindus (benefic dots) for each planet. A transit through a sign rich in bindus tends to deliver good results, while the same planet crossing a low-scoring sign struggles to perform.
Daily Moon Transit
The Moon changes sign roughly every two and a quarter days, coloring the day's mood. Two daily tools matter most: Chandrashtama (when the Moon transits the 8th from your natal Moon, a low-energy day) and Tara Bala, the strength of the day's lunar star relative to yours.
How Vedic transits are judged
Counted from the Moon
Vedic transits are measured from the natal Moon sign (Janma Rashi), not the Ascendant. The number of signs a planet sits away from your Moon decides whether it is favorable or difficult.
Vedha (Obstruction)
Each favorable transit position has a paired vedha, or obstruction point. If a planet occupies that obstructing sign at the same time, it can block or nullify the good result the transit would otherwise give.
Ashtakavarga Strength
Bindus grade the quality of a transit. A planet crossing a sign with many benefic points gives stronger, smoother results; few points dilute or strain the outcome, even for a benefic planet.
Transit With Dasha
Gochar only fires what the running Vimshottari dasha already promises. The dasha defines the theme and potential of the period, while the transit supplies the exact timing that brings the event to life.
Vedic Transits (Gochar) — FAQ
Gochar is the current motion of the nine grahas through the sidereal zodiac, read against your birth chart — traditionally counted from your natal Moon sign (janma rashi), not the ascendant. The house a planet transits from the Moon, its Ashtakavarga points and any vedha (obstruction) together decide whether the transit helps or hinders.
The slow movers: Saturn spends about 2.5 years in a sign, Jupiter about a year, and Rahu-Ketu about 18 months, so their sign changes reshape whole chapters of life. The fast planets — Moon, Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars — colour days and weeks. That is why Sade Sati (Saturn) and Guru gochar (Jupiter) dominate Vedic transit analysis.
Saturn is currently transiting sidereal Pisces (Meena rashi) and remains there until early June 2027, when it enters Aries. This transit keeps Aquarius, Pisces and Aries moon signs in Sade Sati, while Sagittarius (4th from Moon) and Leo (8th) moon signs pass through Saturn's dhaiya.
In gochar, houses are counted from your natal Moon. Each planet gives good results in certain houses from it — Jupiter in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th, Saturn in the 3rd, 6th and 11th — unless a vedha from another transiting planet obstructs the result. Ashtakavarga points then grade the same transit specifically for your chart.
The dasha shows which promises of the birth chart are active; transits time when they surface. A favourable transit delivers fully only when the running Vimshottari period supports the same theme, which is why classical practice reads gochar and dasha together — never transit alone.
With Saturn in sidereal Pisces until June 2027, Sade Sati currently runs for Aquarius (final phase), Pisces (peak phase) and Aries (first phase) moon signs. When Saturn enters Aries in June 2027, Aquarius exits the cycle and Taurus enters it.
Jupiter spends roughly a year in each sidereal sign. It entered Cancer (Karka), its sign of exaltation, in June 2026 — one of the most supportive Jupiter transits. As is typical, it first brushes the next sign, Leo, late in 2026, retrogrades back into Cancer, and settles in Leo in mid-2027.
