Hora — planetary hours
Vedic · Timing
Hora is the Vedic system of planetary hours — each day is divided into 24 segments, each governed by one of the seven classical planets, and the hora lord colours the quality of any action begun within that segment.
What it is
The word 'Hora' is derived from Sanskrit and is closely related to the Greek 'hora' (hour). The system is a branch of classical Muhurta (electional astrology) in which the quality of time is analysed not only through lunar nakshatras and tithis but through the planetary ruler of each hour.
The Hora system assigns each hour of the day — from sunrise to sunrise — to one of the seven Vedic planets in a fixed Chaldean sequence: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon. The first hora of any day is ruled by the planet that also rules the day of the week: on Sunday, the first hora is the Sun's; on Monday, the Moon's; on Tuesday, Mars's, and so on. Subsequent hours follow the Chaldean order.
Because the natural day (sunrise to sunrise) varies in length through the year, Hora hours are not always exactly 60 minutes. Daytime is divided into 12 equal parts (day-horas) and nighttime into 12 equal parts (night-horas). Each part's length varies with the season and latitude.
How it is calculated
Calculation requires the precise sunrise and sunset times at the native's or the query location. Daytime (sunrise to sunset) is divided into 12 equal segments; nighttime (sunset to next sunrise) into 12 equal segments. Each segment is one hora. The first hora of each day begins at sunrise and is ruled by the day's planetary lord. The remaining 23 horas follow the descending Chaldean order (Saturn → Jupiter → Mars → Sun → Venus → Mercury → Moon → Saturn...). To find the hora lord for a given moment: count how many segments have elapsed since sunrise, and use the sequence to find the current ruler.
What it reveals
Each planetary hora has a characteristic quality and set of favourable activities. The Sun hora is auspicious for government dealings, authority figures, leadership actions, medical procedures involving the eyes or heart, and beginning new ventures requiring boldness and public visibility.
The Moon hora favours activities related to emotions, family, food, water, travel by sea, real estate, women-centered activities, and beginning endeavours requiring public receptivity and emotional connection. Venus hora is ideal for arts, love, beauty, luxury purchases, creative projects, and romantic meetings. Mercury hora supports learning, writing, contracts, commerce, and communication. Jupiter hora is excellent for spiritual activities, financial planning, legal proceedings, teaching, and large charitable actions.
Mars hora is powerful but intense — suitable for bold actions, competitive events, surgery, and physical work, but risky for partnerships and legal agreements. Saturn hora is slow and heavy — good for long-term planning, construction, service work, and dealings with older people, but unfavourable for new beginnings.
Frequently asked questions
Are Hora hours always 60 minutes long?
No. Hora hours are proportional to the actual length of day and night at the given location. In summer at high latitudes, daytime horas are much longer than 60 minutes while nighttime horas are shorter, and vice versa in winter. The only day when all horas are exactly 60 minutes is at the equinoxes at the equator.
How does Hora differ from Choghadiya?
Both are Vedic sub-day timing systems, but they operate differently. Choghadiya divides the day into eight periods of 1.5 hours each and assigns each a quality (Amrit, Shubha, Labha, Char, Rog, Kaal, Udveg, Vaar Vela). Hora divides the day into 24 planetary-hour segments governed by the seven classical planets. Both are used together in thorough Muhurta analysis.
Which hora is best for starting a business?
Jupiter hora is traditionally considered most auspicious for beginning financial ventures and long-term businesses, as Jupiter governs prosperity and expansion. Sun hora is strong for leadership-driven enterprises. Venus hora suits creative businesses, arts, or luxury goods. Mercury hora is well-suited for communications, commerce, and technology. The choice should also consider the day's overall Muhurta factors (tithi, nakshatra, yoga).
