Composite chart
Western · Love
When two people come together, something new is created — not just a partnership but an entity with its own horoscope. The composite chart captures that entity by calculating the midpoint of each planetary pair from two natal charts.
What it is
The composite chart is a technique developed within the Western tropical tradition and popularised through the work of Robert Hand. It is constructed by finding the geometric midpoint between each pair of corresponding planets from two natal charts: the midpoint of both Suns becomes the composite Sun, both Moons produce the composite Moon, and so on through all planets, the Ascendant, and the Midheaven.
The resulting chart is read as an autonomous horoscope — not as either individual's chart, but as the chart of the relationship itself. The composite Sun describes the central purpose and identity of the relationship; the composite Moon its emotional atmosphere; Venus and Mars the affectional and physical energy; the 7th house how the union faces the external world.
The composite chart reveals themes that neither partner experiences alone but that arise specifically in this union. A composite Pluto on the Descendant describes an intensely transformative bond regardless of whether either individual has a powerful natal Pluto.
How it is calculated
For each planet and chart point (Sun through Pluto, Ascendant, Midheaven, lunar nodes), the shorter-arc midpoint between the two natal positions is calculated. The composite Ascendant is derived from the midpoint of the two natal Ascendants. The resulting positions are plotted as a new chart and read with standard Western interpretive principles applied to the relationship rather than an individual.
What it reveals
The composite chart reveals the underlying purpose and life-arc of the relationship — the shared themes, strengths, and challenges that define the partnership. It shows whether the union has a strong foundation (composite Venus-Jupiter contacts), intense transformative pressure (composite Pluto prominent), communicative creativity (Mercury well-placed), or tension around power and autonomy. Transits and progressions to the composite chart time pivotal events in the relationship's life.
Frequently asked questions
How is the composite chart different from synastry?
Synastry overlays two individual charts and examines inter-chart aspects. The composite creates a third chart representing the relationship as its own entity. Both techniques are complementary and are used together.
Can a composite chart be read for non-romantic partnerships?
Yes. Business partnerships, close friendships, and family bonds can all be analyzed via a composite chart wherever a sustained, significant relationship exists between two people.
Is the composite different from the Davison chart?
Yes. The composite uses midpoints of natal positions. The Davison chart calculates the actual date, time, and place midpoint between the two births, producing a real astronomical moment.
