Lot of Basis — body foundation

Hellenistic astrology — the foundational tradition codified by Ptolemy, Vettius Valens, Dorotheus of Sidon, and Hephaistio — used a system of lots (sortes, Arabic parts) as calculated zodiacal points that functioned like embedded secondary horoscopes within the chart. Each lot concentrated the meaning of a specific life domain.

The Lot of Fortune (Kleros Tychis) represented the body, material circumstances, and the condition of physical life. The Lot of Spirit (Kleros Daimonos) represented the rational soul, conscious action, and volitional agency. The Lot of Basis was derived from both — it represented the synthesis of body and soul's material foundation: the platform of stability (or instability) on which all outer-world experience rested.

In the context of health, the Lot of Basis functions as a constitutional indicator. A well-placed Lot of Basis (in a sign of dignified ruler, in angular houses, with benefic aspects) describes a person whose fundamental health and material base are resilient and self-renewing. An afflicted Lot of Basis can indicate constitutional weakness, chronic health challenges related to the material body's foundation, or a life marked by insecure material circumstances affecting bodily well-being.

The Lot of Basis reveals the bedrock resilience of the physical life — whether the person has a stable material and bodily foundation from which to navigate challenges, or whether the basis itself is shifting and requires conscious building. In health readings, astrologers examine both the sign of the Lot of Basis (which describes the quality of the foundation) and its lord's placement (which describes the life area from which the foundation is resourced or depleted).

Classical Hellenistic interpretation treats the Lot of Basis as showing whether a person has 'good basis' — stable material conditions that support healthy embodiment — or 'poor basis,' suggesting that physical health challenges are entangled with material instability. Benefic planets in or ruling the Lot of Basis strengthen it considerably.
