14 Hellenistic lots
Hellenistic · Esoteric
The Hellenistic Lots — known in later Arabic tradition as the Arabic Parts — are a family of sensitive zodiacal points calculated from three-planet formulas, encoding the interplay of body, soul, fortune, and fate in the ancient Western horoscope.
What it is
The Lots are among the oldest techniques in Western astrology, documented in Hellenistic texts from the 1st century BCE to the 4th century CE — particularly in Vettius Valens (Anthology), Dorotheus of Sidon (Carmen Astrologicum), Paulus Alexandrinus, and Ptolemy (Tetrabiblos). The medieval Arabic tradition preserved and expanded the system, adding dozens of new lots, which is why they are often called the 'Arabic Parts' in modern usage — though their origin is Greek.
A Lot is calculated by taking the arc from one planet to another and projecting that arc from the Ascendant (or another point). The formula is: Lot = Ascendant + (Planet B − Planet A). The most famous is the Lot of Fortune: daytime Lot of Fortune = Ascendant + (Moon − Sun); nighttime formula reverses the luminaries. Each Lot is a zodiacal degree that acts as a sensitive point in the chart — interpreted like a planet or house cusp, influencing the themes associated with its name.
The 14 core lots in the classical Hellenistic system include: Fortune (body, health, luck), Spirit (soul, action, reputation), Eros (desire), Necessity (compulsion, fate), Courage (strength, daring), Victory (success), Nemesis (retribution), Daimon (spirit, fate), Love, the Lot of the Exaltation, Marriage, Children, Father, and Mother. Each is calculated from a specific triad of planets and each governs a domain of life.
How it is calculated
The calculation is sect-dependent for the primary lots. For a daytime chart (Sun above the horizon at birth), the Lot of Fortune = Ascendant + Moon − Sun. For a nighttime chart, the formula is reversed: Lot of Fortune = Ascendant + Sun − Moon. The Lot of Spirit is the reverse of Fortune by sect: daytime Lot of Spirit = Ascendant + Sun − Moon; nighttime = Ascendant + Moon − Sun. All other lots are calculated by similar triadic formulas specified for each, many of which are also reversed by sect. The degrees are computed in the tropical zodiac (Hellenistic tradition uses tropical). The resulting degree and sign is placed in the chart and interpreted like a point with house position, planetary ruler, and aspects from other planets.
What it reveals
The Lot of Fortune and its lord reveal the primary bodily and material fortune axis. Planets aspecting the Lot of Fortune — especially trines and sextiles from benefics (Jupiter, Venus) — classically indicate prosperity, health, and physical wellbeing. The Lot of Spirit and its lord show the soul's action, reputation, and the area of life where the native exerts purposeful effort toward their fate.
The Lot of Eros shows the direction of desire — what the native is compelled toward, not what they have. The Lot of Daimon (Spirit) reveals the native's guiding inner force. The Lot of Marriage (calculated from Venus and Saturn) describes the quality of committed partnerships. The Lot of Necessity reveals where the native experiences fate's compulsion — areas where choice feels limited.
In Hellenistic practice, the Lot of Fortune and the Lot of Spirit together formed the foundational framework for interpreting the whole chart: Fortune as the body and circumstantial life, Spirit as the soul and volitional action. Their relationship to each other and to the Ascendant was seen as mapping the fundamental tension in a life between what befalls a person and what they choose.
Frequently asked questions
Are the Hellenistic Lots the same as Arabic Parts?
The Arabic Parts are largely the same technique as the Hellenistic Lots, transmitted through Arabic astrologers in the 8th-11th centuries CE. The Arabic tradition expanded the list significantly — sometimes to hundreds of parts — and introduced some modifications. The term 'Arabic Parts' is historically inaccurate as the origin is Hellenistic, but it remains common in modern usage.
Why does the formula reverse for day and night charts?
Sect (hairesis in Greek) is a fundamental Hellenistic concept: the Sun is the diurnal (day) sect light and governs daytime charts; the Moon is the nocturnal (night) sect light and governs nighttime charts. The Lot formulas are reversed so that each lot favours the sect light appropriate to the native's birth condition. This reversal ensures the Lot of Fortune aligns with the sect light — the primary luminary — of the chart.
How are Hellenistic Lots used in timing (zodiacal releasing)?
The most important timing technique associated with the Lots is Zodiacal Releasing (aphesis), described by Vettius Valens. The Lot of Fortune is used for the body and material life, the Lot of Spirit for the soul and profession. Signs are released from the Lot, and each sign's release period is determined by its associated planet's 'minor years.' This creates a layered timing framework that has been found remarkably accurate for career peaks and life phase transitions.
