5 essential dignities
Hellenistic · Esoteric
The five essential dignities — Domicile, Exaltation, Triplicity, Bounds, and Face — are the cornerstone of Hellenistic astrology's framework for evaluating a planet's intrinsic strength and capacity to deliver its significations effectively.
What it is
In Hellenistic astrology — as documented by Ptolemy (Tetrabiblos), Vettius Valens (Anthologiae), Dorotheus of Sidon, and Antiochus of Athens — a planet's power to act is not uniform across the zodiac. Depending on its degree position, a planet is either in a place of strength (dignity) or weakness (debility). This is called essential dignity because it concerns the planet's essential nature and capacity, as opposed to accidental dignity (which concerns house placement, speed, light, etc.).
The five essential dignities, in descending order of strength, are: (1) Domicile (oikos, house) — the planet rules this sign entirely and is most at home; (2) Exaltation (hypsoma) — the planet has a special honored position in this sign and produces its finest quality; (3) Triplicity (trigonon) — the planet participates in the rulership of a group of three signs of the same element; (4) Bounds/Terms (horia/termoi) — five unequal degree divisions within each sign, each assigned to a planet; (5) Face/Decan (prosopon) — each sign divided into three 10° portions, each assigned to a planet.
William Lilly's Christian Astrology (1647) later codified weighted point values: 5 for Domicile, 4 for Exaltation, 3 for Triplicity, 2 for Terms, 1 for Face — allowing an aggregate dignity score to be calculated for any planet in any degree of the zodiac.
How it is calculated
Domicile and Exaltation assignments are fixed (e.g., Sun rules Leo, is exalted in Aries; Moon rules Cancer, is exalted in Taurus). Triplicity rulers differ between day and night charts: in the day chart, the Sun, Jupiter, and Saturn lead the fire, air, and earth triplicities, respectively; the Moon leads water. At night, the leading planet for each triplicity shifts. The classical Hellenistic (Dorothean) triplicity tables are used, not the simplified later medieval versions.
Bounds (Terms) are the most complex: each sign is divided into five unequal degree arcs, with each arc assigned to one of the five non-luminary planets (Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury) according to the Egyptian or Ptolemaic term tables. A planet within its own terms is in essential dignity even if nowhere near its domicile or exaltation. Face assignments are straightforward: each 10° decan is assigned to one of the seven classical planets in descending Chaldean order starting from Mars at 0° Aries.
What it reveals
The five essential dignities reveal the qualitative state of each planet — whether it has full capacity to express its nature beneficially, partial capacity, or is operating in a weakened state. A planet in domicile or exaltation is like a person at home or in an honored role: confident, effective, and able to support the matters it governs. A planet in peregrine (no dignities at all) is like a stranger in an unknown city — resourceless and unreliable. A planet in detriment or fall is actively uncomfortable, expressing its nature with difficulty or distortion.
For the interpreter, essential dignities answer the fundamental question: can this planet deliver on its promises? A strong Venus in the 7th house (in domicile or exaltation) promises good relational outcomes; the same Venus in detriment may indicate relationship difficulties despite its house position.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between essential and accidental dignity?
Essential dignity concerns the planet's intrinsic capacity based on its zodiac degree position — whether it is in its sign of rule, exaltation, triplicity, terms, or face. Accidental dignity concerns external conditions that empower or weaken the planet regardless of sign — house placement (angular vs. cadent), proximity to the Ascendant or MC, speed, direction (direct vs. retrograde), combustion (closeness to the Sun), and light (waxing vs. waning Moon).
Which dignity is most powerful — Domicile or Exaltation?
In the Hellenistic and medieval tradition, Domicile is generally considered the primary and most comprehensive dignity — the planet rules its sign and is fully at home. Exaltation is often described as an honored guest position where the planet performs exceptionally well but in a perhaps more singular, elevated way. Both are strong; some topics favor one over the other.
Are the traditional essential dignity tables different from modern Western astrology's use?
Yes. Modern popular Western astrology often uses only Domicile and Exaltation (two dignities) and assigns rulerships with modern outer planets (Uranus for Aquarius, Neptune for Pisces, Pluto for Scorpio). Traditional Hellenistic and medieval astrology uses all five dignities with the seven classical planets only, which gives a richer and more nuanced assessment of planetary condition.
